Rodenegg Castle

Rodenegg Castle is open to visitors from May to October.

The castle can be visited during guided tours with a castle guide, which lasts for about an hour.

Rodenegg Castle towers majestically over the Rienz gorge and is one of the largest fortified castles in South Tyrol.

In the 16th century, the castle was renovated and extended by the Oswald von Wolkenstein family and is still owned by his descendants today.

The Iwain frescoes from the 13th century are the oldest secular wall paintings in the German-speaking world.

Another highlight is the so-called “Lauterfresserloch”, a dungeon in which Matthias Perger was imprisoned in the 17th century before being burned at the stake as a witch. This is the origin of the legend of the Lauterfresser.
